I wanted to explore how a familiar object could take a different form while remaining useful. The stand became part of the clock itself, with two legs joined by a bridge that passes through the centre of the housing.
The design
The main challenge was allowing the hands to move around a support that had to remain still. I developed the design in Fusion 360, working through the mounting arrangement, rotating assemblies, and clearances around the central rod.
The mechanism is designed around concentric sleeves and independent drives for the time indicators. Two white hands indicate hours and minutes, with a yellow disc behind them designed to show seconds. Twelve recessed markers are designed for illumination around the dial.
The housing combines two shades of matte orange with a softer yellow at the centre. The polished metal stand supports the circular body.
The housing is designed for 3D printing, with a removable back for access to the mechanism. The continuous stand is intended to be formed from aluminium. I’m continuing to develop the movement and assembly.
